Digital Transformation Starts with Business Value, Not Technology

Many transformation projects start by choosing technology and stall halfway. Transformation engineering means starting from the business problem, designing the path and measuring value at every step.

"Which technology should we choose?" This is often the first question in digital transformation meetings, and it is one of the main reasons so many projects stall.

Transformation is not a technology project

Organizational transformation means changing how value is created. Technology is the tool of that change, not its goal. When technology is the starting point, the organization ends up with a solution in search of a problem.

Transformation engineering in four steps

  1. Diagnose: identify key business challenges and opportunities to create value.
  2. Design: define the target state, the roadmap and the success criteria.
  3. Engineer and deliver: select and implement solutions in small, measurable increments.
  4. Embed and evolve: manage change, enable people and improve continuously.

The role of leadership

No transformation program succeeds without active leadership support. Senior leaders must clarify the vision, set priorities and stay the course through the natural resistance every organization has to change.

The right question at the start of a transformation is: "Which problem, if solved, would create the most value for the organization and its stakeholders?" The answer will also point to the right technology.
